General Homeschool Questions
The steps to begin homeschooling in Florida can vary depending on whether you’re using a scholarship (like Step Up for Students) or not. To get personalized guidance that fits your family’s needs, book a consultation call with The Learning Hive—we’ll walk you through everything step-by-step!
Requirements vary depending on your scholarship type. If your child receives the Unique Abilities scholarship, you must submit a letter of intent and register as a homeschooler with your school district. If your child receives the PEP (Parent Education Program) scholarship, you do not need to submit an LOI nor register with your local school district. PEP students are required to take a norm-referenced test at the end of each academic year. Need help with testing? Book a call with The Hive—we’re here to help!
Homeschooling offers families the freedom to personalize their child’s education while aligning learning with their values, faith, and pace. Unlike traditional public schooling, it allows for flexible schedules, deeper parent involvement, and meaningful real-world learning experiences tailored to the child’s strengths.
Parents must intentionally create regular opportunities for connection—through co-ops, enrichment classes, field trips, church groups, and sports or extracurricular activities. Consistent interaction with peers in varied, real-world settings often leads to deeper, more meaningful social development than traditional classroom environments.
You don’t have to homeschool alone—The Learning Hive is here to walk alongside you every step of the way. We offer a Christ-centered homeschool program for elementary-aged children, where students attend in person part of the week and complete the rest of their learning at home with family support. Whether you’re looking for part-time instruction, academic enrichment, or personalized guidance to get started, The Hive is a place where your family will feel equipped, encouraged, and empowered.
Yes, home education students may participate in extracurricular activities, including sports—at the public school they are zoned for or eligible to attend under their district’s Controlled Open Enrollment Policy (s. 1006.15, F.S. & s. 1002.31, F.S.). While s. 1006.15 primarily applies to grades 9–12, students in grades 6–8 may also participate if the school is an FHSAA member (s. 1006.20(1), F.S.). If a related class is required (e.g., band or strength training), the school must allow the student to enroll in that class (s. 1006.15(5), F.S.). Home education students must meet the same immunization requirements as public-school students, and districts may not create policies that restrict access.
Absolutely! Homeschooled students in Florida are eligible for both Bright Futures Scholarships and Dual Enrollment. To qualify for Bright Futures, homeschoolers must be registered with their district during 11th and 12th grade and meet all standard requirements, including residency, SAT/ACT scores, volunteer or work hours, and enrollment in an eligible postsecondary institution. They are also eligible for Dual Enrollment beginning in 6th grade, if they meet GPA and placement test requirements and complete a home education articulation agreement with the college or university. Dual Enrollment does not affect Bright Futures eligibility—in fact, it can help strengthen a student’s academic record and readiness for college.

Learning Pod Questions

A homeschool hybrid program combines the flexibility of home education with the benefits of a structured, part-time classroom setting. Students attend in-person classes 2–3 days per week for academic instruction and enrichment, while parents continue guided learning at home with ongoing support from qualified educators.
At The Learning Hive, we see parents as the primary educators in their child’s learning journey. Our program is here to come alongside you—offering support, resources, and a collaborative community to help your child thrive. We believe learning happens best when parents are actively involved, and while we play an important role, we are here to partner with you, not replace you.
Though our program is personalized, it is best suited for independent, academically driven learners who do not need extensive accommodations. In addition, students must be able to conduct themselves in the classroom and program without being a disruption and must be able to participate in assigned work. We kindly encourage families of children with more significant special needs to explore programs that are specifically tailored to provide the specialized support their child deserves.
Yes, The Learning Hive is a direct-pay Step-Up provider.
In a world where technology is reducing face-to-face interaction, we believe socialization is more important than ever. At The Learning Hive, we place a strong emphasis on building community and helping students connect meaningfully with peers of all ages. Through intentional activities, group projects, community events, and monthly field trips, we’re raising students who are not only academically strong but also skilled in building real-world connections.
While we offer flexibility, we do ask that your child attend the majority of scheduled sessions. Building community and lasting friendships is a key part of the experience. We put a lot of care into creating meaningful memories and fostering academic growth, which is best achieved with consistent attendance. We understand and respect the importance of family time and vacations. However, if absences become excessive, we may ask families to consider giving up their spot to ensure the seat goes to a student who can fully commit.
